Marchesini Group Beauty

A-eye lipstick

Marchesini Group Beauty calls the A-Eye lipstick a “ground-breaking leap in quality control for lipsticks through the integration of Artificial Intelligence.” Developed by SEA Vision, a company within Marchesini Group, the system employs “cutting-edge hardware with proprietary software and algorithms” to assess lipsticks’ quality during the production process. The system’s cameras capture 360-degree images of the lipstick, with special attention paid to the tip. These images, the company says, then undergo “rigorous analysis via the software,” using semantic segmentation to assess each of the lipstick’s components and gauge the product’s attributes, while detecting any defects. The system then “communicates with the production machine to ensure automatic rejection of defective products.” The system uses a combination of AI algorithms, classical algorithms, and industrial automation to assess a lipstick. Marchesini Group states that its goal with the system is to “relieve [human] operators of [the] difficult, repetitive, and tiring task” of assessing a lipstick’s quality. The company says the system improves product quality and enhances production performance with its “automatic, real-time, and reliable control over 100% of lipstick production.”

Product Description
A-eye lipstick represents a groundbreaking leap in quality control for lipsticks through the integration of Artificial Intelligence. Developed by SEA Vision, a Marchesini Group company, this innovative system melds cutting-edge hardware with proprietary software and algorithms. The system uses several cameras to capture 360-degree images of the lipstick with special attention to the tip. These images undergo rigorous analysis via the software, dissecting various lipstick components, gauging product attributes, and detecting any defects. Results are then cross-referenced against predefined quality thresholds for that specific production. The system can seamlessly interface with production machinery, managing the automatic rejection of unacceptable products.
Claims & Benefits
The system is intuitive and easy to use even for non-expert operators. The very first time a new production is configured, a few image acquisitions are needed to set up the format. The system replaces the operator in the quality control inspection, the benefits include: the objectivity of the quality control acceptance, and the product inspection speed keeping the production rate of the machine. Moreover, the system communicates with the production machine to ensure automatic rejection of defective products.
Technical Details
The system consists of an industrial PC with state-of-the-art components to which various cameras are connected in order to inspect the lipstick. We designed a LED lighting system for this purpose. SEA Vision's software includes multiple computer vision models performing different tasks in order to analyze the product entirety. Performing semantic segmentation the system identifies the different lipstick parts: body, tip, logos, lettering, collar, and outer shell. Through an anomaly detection algorithm we identify the defects such as, holes, scratches, and color variations. Classical vision algorithms are combined to check heights, diameters, relative positions, and areas.
Launch Date
The first glimpse was presented for the first time during the fair Cosmopack Bologna (Italy) 2023. The official product launch is forecasted for Cosmopack Bologna (Italy) 2024.

What sets your product apart and why is it innovative?
The system is innovative and is based on a combination of AI algorithms, classical algorithms, and industrial automation. Currently, the inspection of lipsticks is performed by humans during the production process. The system wants to relieve the operator of this difficult, repetitive, and tiring task. A-eye lipstick allows to perform an automatic, real-time, and reliable control over 100% of lipstick production, enhancing the production performance, and increasing the product quality. Neural networks, deep learning-based semantic segmentation techniques, and anomaly detection strategies, are now the de facto standard in the Artificial Intelligence field. We combine them with our experience in machine automation and machine vision to bring a product on the market that is disruptive for the quality control on a product with a hight level of complexity such as lipstick. All these system capabilities are offered to the operator together with a ease of usage design, allowing a simple and fast process for the configuration of new product formats by means of the acquisition of a few images depicting acceptable samples.
How do you promote your product on multiple channels?
The solution is available for cosmetic applications in all of the main markets worldwide. It is promoted on a dedicated page on the SEA Vision website; it is promoted on social media such as LinkedIn by means of dedicated posts and videos, and on YouTube with dedicated videos. Moreover, it is shown both in on-line magazines, and during international fairs and events via digital presentations and printed brochures.
How does your product meet the evaluation criteria of its category?
The category of the product is Innovative Technology. The system uses the latest Artificial Intelligence techniques and brings an automatic control solution with all its benefits for an application where human control is currently the standard. The ease of configuration does not require highly skilled operators. Moreover, using cameras, the quality-control is always objective and can be managed and agreed between the company and its business partners. The system HMI also gives feedback to the operator on the line highlighting an eventual decrease in performance trends, allowing the machine to be responsively tuned to manage the situation: fewer rejections make the production more efficient and sustainable.
